  • 1.  IoT and the coming recession

With all signs now pointing clearly towards an impending recession, should we be worried about the project of a global Internet of Things? In a word, YES.

That's the opening paragraph of the IoT and the coming recession blog post I wrote this weekend, reflecting on what's likely to come following an already challenging two years of global pandemic and supply chain disruptions.  The blog post is written from the perspective of reelyActive's unique journey as a purpose-driven IoT startup, and with the intent of fostering not only discussion, but also action, towards better economic and organisational models for the (A)IoT and our global community.

I'd be interested to know how AIoT Canada members feel about what's ahead and how it might affect our industry, not only negatively, but very much in creating new opportunities.

    Hi Jeffrey,
your posts always raise very interesting points.

Yes, I hear from different sources, from different backgrounds, that a recession may be coming. I do not have the expertise (nor a crystal ball) to confirm it, but I have a gut feeling that our domain (A)IoT will provide opportunities to counteract it for many enterprises.

We need however to think out of the box (yes, a cliché. Nevertheless true). There are ways to become more productive, doing more with less, compensate for shortage of competent workforce. And most of all creating new business paradigms.
Thus, I do believe that AIOT will not only help save money by improving efficiency but also generate new revenue streams.

I am glad that the Canadian Government is acknowledging the issue (in a larger context) and has created a 4B$ program that companies can very easily take advantage of: https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/152.nsf/eng/home (the Canada Digital Adoption Program)

My company (Claridion) is a certified Digital Advisor that business can use to come up with a plan (up to 15K$ grant through the program).
Not trying to boast our services, but wanted to emphasize the amazing opportunity that the government is affording Canadian businesses.

So, I unequivocally and ardently agree with you in supporting an open Internet of Things project. (BTW, I love your Alan Kay quotes. I have been following him on Quora for a while. What a tremendous amount of experience and wisdom in the field.)
