    Having been deploying LoRaWAN sensors in all kinds of environments for the past 5 years, I can tell you that this new announcement by the LoRa Alliance is pretty major. LoRaWAN being probably the best wireless technology to deploy battery powered sensors in hard to reach places (like underground parking garages, concrete basements, etc), we do run into cases where the signal just doesn't manage to reliably make it from the sensor the remote gateway (which could be many kilometers away). 

    Up to now this technology only worked in a star topology, meaning that the sensor talks to a gateway which is connected to the Internet via wired ot wireless connectivity. In cases of poor LoRaWAN coverage, one had to deploy another gateway, also connected to the Internet. That's where it gets tricky. Sometimes there is no easy access to power and Internet. 

    Well this new annoucement by the folks at the LoRa Alliance changes everything. New battery-operated relays provide easy to deploy, low power, and standards-based approach to achieve robust network coverage in challenging environments.
